Spring is street appeal season in New Zealand. Between now and the end of October, four national charities will put thousands of volunteers on street corners, outside supermarkets, and in shopping centres across the country – and all four are recruiting right now.
Every date below has been checked against the charity's own website. A standard shift is about two hours. If you've been meaning to try volunteering, this is the easiest possible way in.
Assistance Dogs NZ Trust – Friday 18 & Saturday 19 September
First up is the Blue Puppy Appeal street collection, run by Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September. The trust breeds and trains assistance dogs for New Zealanders with disabilities, and its own figures show why the fundraising matters: it costs around $75,000 to raise, train, place, and support one assistance dog throughout its working life. Collectors give a couple of hours with a bucket and a vest – and yes, you're welcome to bring your own dog. Heroes for Heart Kids – Friday 25 & Saturday 26 September
A week later, Heart Kids New Zealand runs its Heroes for Heart Kids appeal, supporting families of children with heart conditions. Collection shifts are listed for Friday 25 and Saturday 26 September and take about two hours – you can shake a bucket as a superhero collector (capes and masks optional) or help run a sausage sizzle or bake sale. Pink Ribbon Street Appeal – Friday 16 & Saturday 17 October
The biggest of the season. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ's Pink Ribbon Street Appeal runs on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Shifts are two hours, the Foundation provides everything you need, and you can register for a site near you at pinkribbonvolunteer.org.nz – or register your interest here. It's also one of the best team volunteering options of the year: a workplace can take on a whole collection site together.
SPCA Fill the Bucket – Friday 30 & Saturday 31 October
The season closes with SPCA's Fill the Bucket appeal on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October. Collectors work in pairs on two-hour shifts at sites across the country, and SPCA provides the stickers, bibs, and buckets. Bring weather-appropriate clothes, water, and a folding chair if you'd rather not stand – and your dog is welcome on the street with you. SPCA is also recruiting area coordinators to set up and look after local sites. Register your interest on our listing.
