Most volunteering is close to home — and that's where most of it should be. But 2026, the International Year of Volunteers, is also being framed as a year for New Zealanders to look outward: to share skills and stand alongside communities across the Pacific and in Timor-Leste.
Why it matters
The Pacific is our neighbourhood. Skilled New Zealand volunteers — in health, trades, teaching, IT, governance — can make a real difference when they work in genuine partnership with local organisations, rather than parachuting in with their own agenda.
The best overseas volunteering follows the lead of the communities it serves. It's slow, humble, and focused on leaving capability behind rather than taking a story home.
Closer to home, too
Not everyone can travel, and you don't need to. The Pacific communities living here in Aotearoa run festivals, language nests, churches, and support networks that depend on volunteers. Helping there is every bit as valuable as getting on a plane.
Where to start
If overseas service appeals to you, go through a reputable programme that vets placements and supports both volunteers and host communities. If you'd rather contribute locally, browse opportunities with Pacific community organisations near you.
Outward-looking or close to home, the principle is the same: turn up, listen first, and be useful.
